Ontario Passes Liberal MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti’s Bangladeshi Heritage Month Bill
(TORONTO) – Today, the Ontario Legislature voted in favour of Liberal MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti’s bill to proclaim March as Bangladeshi Heritage Month. With the passing of this bill, March of every year will now officially be recognized as Bangladeshi Heritage Month in Ontario.
“I’m honoured that I was able to be a part of this great moment for Ontario’s Bangladeshi community,” said Berardinetti. “The passing of this bill formally recognizes and celebrates the immeasurable impact and numerous significant contributions that the Bangladeshi community has made to our province.”
March is a significant month for the Bangladeshi community. It was in March 1971 that Bangladesh marked its formal declaration of independence and March 26th is celebrated as Bangladesh’s national Independence Day. Bangladeshi Heritage Month now offers another opportunity for Bangladeshi-Ontarians to celebrate and share their traditions, culture and accomplishments with all Ontarians.
“Canada was one of the first countries to recognize Bangladesh immediately after it declared independence. And that relationship has continued on to this day, founded upon shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law,” noted Berardinetti.
